Aliança christens the “Pedro Álvares Cabral"

PRESS RELEASE

Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança christens the “Pedro Álvares Cabral”

Hamburg/Itapoá, 25.04.2014

Yesterday, Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança christened its container ship “Pedro Álvares Cabral” during a ceremony held for customers at the port of Itapoá. The ship’s Sponsor is Elisabeth von Krüger de Freitas, the wife of Humberto Ramos de Freitas, Executive Officer for Logistics and Mineral Exploration of Vale S.A., one of the most important clients of Aliança Bulk. Dr. Arnt Vespermann, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd and Julian Thomas, General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança, also participated in the ceremonies.

The “Pedro Álvares Cabral” is one of four identical 3,800 TEU ships by which Aliança is modernising and expanding its cabotage fleet. Her three sister ships were christened during the course of last year at Pecém, Manaus and Santos. The ships not only set new standards as regards capacity in cabotage services, but also in terms of the environment. All ships carry the names of important South American explorers. The “Pedro Álvares Cabral” was named after the famous Portuguese mariner who discovered Brazil on 22 April 1500.

The christening of the “Pedro Álvares Cabral” in Itapoá (in the Federal state of Santa Catarina) allows the shipping carrier to underline how strongly the post is anchored as a “hub” in the international liner service and the cabotage and Mercosur services. With its terminal in the only deep-water port in southern Brazil, Aliança – together with the Battistella group and LogZ Logistica Brasil have successfully completed an important infrastructure project. Porto Itapoá started operations in mid-2011, has a current handling capacity of 500,000 TEU each year, and employs around 650 staff.

40% Drop in U.S./South America Trade

CSAV,Hamburg-Sued and Alianca will start a joint service between the U.S. and South America.

They had one several years ago, before the big increase in world trade.

All trade lanes have started this type of rationalization again. It's the best way for them to pull out tonnage, and still offer a decent service.

PRESS RELEASE

Hamburg, 10 August 2009. In response to market conditions that have changed significantly over the past year, Hamburg Süd, Aliança and CSAV have decided to rationalise their services in the trade between South America East Coast and North America East Coast. The market volumes in the trade have dropped by as much as 40 per cent from the prior year period, necessitating these tonnage and system changes.

Subject to Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) approval, the much needed rationalisation will take place through the merger of the CSAV operated USAtlan Service with the Hamburg Süd and Aliança operated Tango service.

The „New Tango” string will be operated with seven ships with a nominal intake of 3,500 TEU each, of which five will be provided by Hamburg Süd / Aliança and two by CSAV with the following rotation:

New York – Philadelphia – Norfolk – Charleston – Jacksonville – Port Everglades – Puerto Cabello – Suape – Santos – Buenos Aires – Rio Grande – Navegantes – Santos – Rio de Janeiro – Salvador – Suape – Pecem – New York

The new service configuration will provide a quality product better matched to market needs, more comprehensive port coverage and competitive transit times in all major lanes.

The first sailings will be performed by the “CSAV Itaim” calling New York on 19 September 2009, subject to FMC approval.

Hamburg Sud and Alianca call at Havana, Cuba

Alianca is owned by Hamburg-Sued. They have not dropped the Alianca name as it is Brazilian Flag and well known.

They operate pretty much as one, except for the coastal trade in Brazil which only Alianca can provide.

The recent announcement of changes to their schedule is rather boring, unless you really need to know this stuff, or just want to brush up on your geography.
Honestly, I had to look up Navegantes, as this port was built only in 2007.

What I did find interesting is the port call at Havana. Of course, you cannot load cargo from the U.S. to Havana, but that doesn't mean every other country can't, and does, ship to Cuba.

This whole Cuba embargo thing by the U.S. is non-sense, and I expect it to change not too long after Obama takes offices.

Hamburg Sued and Alianca adjust vessel port calls

Hamburg Sud and Alianca announced changes to their two-string U.S. Gulf-Central America-Caribbean-South America East Coast (UCLA) service.

The carriers said String 1, offering direct connections between Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and the U.S. Gulf, will now call Houston, Cartagena, Suape, Santos, Rio Grande, Navegantes, Paranagua, Santos, Cartagena, Veracruz, Altamira, and back to Houston.

The rotation for String 2 remains the same, covering Santos, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Puerto Cabello, Cartagena, Santo Tomas de Castilla, Havana, Veracruz, Altamira, Manzanillo, Cartagena, Puerto Cabello, and back to Santos.

The two carriers said the changes follow operational difficulties at ports in Venezuela, while continuing to serve the country's Port of La Guaira via Cartagena, Colombia, through a dedicated feeder service operated by Hamburg Sud.
